Bereavement support groups are counseling oriented groups designed to assist the newly bereaved. The focus is on helping the individuals in the group learn about grief and, in particular, learn about their own individual unique grief reaction. Greater self-awareness will enable participants to better manage their grief during periods of depression, or potentially stressful occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries and holidays. As individuals begin to heal from the pain of grief, another focus of the group is to help them adjust to a world without the deceased. This leads to a transition from being preoccupied with the past to meeting the challenges of the present and future.
Most groups are general bereavement meaning that people with different relationship losses (spouse, sibling, child, parent) will be in the same group.  There will be specialized groups for bereaved parents (led by trained parents who lost a son) and survivors of suicide at St. Bernard's Parish. There is a registration fee of $20 to participate in all groups. Fall support groups
are being offered at two parishes. If you have questions, call  516-799-5873.
